Mondes Projects recently partnered with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to transform 15 of their diverse properties into models of sustainability. Our expertise in whole-building decarbonisation was key in delivering bespoke solutions across a range of facilities, including respite centres, NHS clinics, children’s centres, schools, libraries, and offices. By focusing on cutting carbon emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and future-proofing these essential community assets, we helped pave the way for a more sustainable future.
Mondes adopted a comprehensive decarbonisation approach, assessing every aspect of the buildings—including upgrading insulation and windows for improved fabric performance, modernising heating and ventilation systems, and recommending energy-saving lighting solutions. We also evaluated the electrical capacity of each property to ensure it could support future low-carbon upgrades. A key feature of this project was our use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess the feasibility of connecting these buildings to a proposed district heating network either at present or at a later stage. By mapping site locations, energy demands, and local grid infrastructure, we provided data-driven recommendations on how district heating could be integrated with other low carbon solutions such as heat pumps and solar power, offering a holistic and sustainable solution for the future.
Our process was both thorough and practical. We conducted detailed investment grade energy audits and site surveys, before developing tailored decarbonisation strategies for each property. These strategies focused on immediate improvements—such as enhancing insulation and installing energy-efficient LED lighting—with long-term recommendations, such as integrating with the proposed district heating network within the area and upgrading electrical capacity to meet future energy demands. Our CIBSE-accredited engineers developed comprehensive design packages (RIBA Stages 2 and 3), including aspects from building fabric improvements to advanced heating systems, streamlining the process for the council to secure funding through schemes such as the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) at next stages and commence their decarbonisation works with ease.
Our detailed reports and designs provided actionable solutions that turned complex challenges into clear opportunities—proving children’s centres the opportunity to cut energy costs, NHS clinic’s carbon reduction opportunities and Family Hubs proposals to connect to district heating. By integrating immediate improvements with long-term strategies, Mondes have created a pathway for these buildings to contribute to a greener, cleaner future. This project aligns with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s climate action plan motto, “More can and must be done,”.
Mondes Projects doesn’t just deliver sustainable, cost-effective upgrades—we set the benchmark in decarbonisation, consistently exceeding even the most ambitious goals. Our unmatched expertise in future-proofing buildings and driving smarter resource use positions us as the go-to partner for councils and organisations determined to lead the charge towards Net Zero.
